How to Make Your Company Video Better
Jordan Behan – Sep 05, 2008Regular readers will remember our lip dub video from a few months back, when we bobbed and weaved through Gastown to the Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun."
Our video was a response to the "original" from Connected Ventures, and we were not alone, as a quick visit to OfficeLipDub.com will show.
In case you're thinking about making your own office lip dub video, Valleywag recently published an article with "5 Rules for Making a Company Video Worth watching." Poaching their own editing gimmick, here's that list, as a <100 word version:
1. Get your people to either commit themselves fully to the project, or stay out of the way. Know what else doesn't hurt? Actually memorizing the lyrics.
2. Get the heavies involved. (Yes, this means your Founders).
3. Plan meticulously and practice.
4. Learn to edit. A hint: Editing usually takes longer than filming. (in the case of some of the best office lip dub vids with continuous shots, ignore rule #4 and see rule #3)
5. Feature the most attractive coworkers prominently.
Here's an example of one that we think got it right. Vive le France!
And as a Friday bonus, I asked my friends on Twitter what was the funniest video they had seen all week, and here are the replies:
- Phillip Jeffrey liked Andrea Mitchell buried in ballons at the RNC.
- James' pick was Demitri Martin's flip chart standup. (If you haven't seen it, watch NOW)
- Dustin Sacks pointed to a Sesame Street classic: Put Down the Duckie.
Jake & Amir Master the 2:00 Comedy Sketch
Mark Freeman – Jul 09, 2008For over a year now, Jake and Amir have released a short comedy sketch every couple of days, usually from their desks at the CollegeHumor.com offices in New York, creating one very likeable and sympathetic character in Jake, and one of the most grating, pathetically annoying characters ever, in Amir, masterfully played by Amir (who isn't actually like that in real life). These guys have perfected the skill of conveying gut-tingling, awkward social moments in two-minute bursts. I'd take two minutes of original creativity on the Internet over 20 minutes of recycled jokes and laugh tracks on television any day. Lately, the show has really come in to its own with more complex narrative techniques and better production quality. The last couple of episodes were especially good and you can check them out on their website at www.jakeandamir.com
